What is bokashi? Bokashi is wheaten-bran that has been brewed with effective-microorganisms. Bokashi is used to treat food waste to stop it from rotting and smelling. This form of recycling diverts food waste from landfill, saving 98% in carbon emissions.

Bokashi Bran® is manufactured in Gauteng, South Africa using the original EM® formulation from EMRO, Japan but brewed here in South Africa under licence. Microbes used to manufacture Bokashi Bran® bokashi are local, South African microbes. The formulation is Japanese technology but 100% found on South African soils. Microbes are not physically flown or shipped in from Japan.

The company was established in April 2012 so that it can produce the highest quality bokashi and divert food waste from landfill. Our bokashi takes more than 4 months to produce because we allow for optimal brewing time. Our unique recipe took 18 months to develop and we proud ourselves as making the best bokashi that works exceptionally well. We may be a little more expensive, but this bokashi is the “real stuff”. The added benefit of our bokashi is that is doesn’t expire. Like a good red wine, it only gets better over time because of our unique recipe.

Bokashi Bran® presents an opportunity to:

  • recycle landfill-bound food waste,
  • save landfill space,
  • save 98% Greenhouse Gas Emissions caused from food waste at landfill,
  • benefit from the bokashi compost,
  • improve the quality and quantity of recyclable material.

Soil Sample Test Results

The Agricultural Research Council in Pretoria (ARC), tested Bokashi Bran’s results with composting. They found the elements Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium and Manganese improved by more than 120% within 7 weeks. These results are available in the Technical Information link below.

It is important to return the nutrients from food waste to our soils to eliminate the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Bokashi is revolutionary in the composting industry because for the first time, using Bokashi Bran®, we can compost cooked food, protein and dairy safely.

Benefits of Bokashi Bran® Composting

  • Higher crop yields

  • Improved soil structure

  • Improved nutrient soil

  • Lower disease pressure on plants

  • Lower requirements for pesticides

  • Improved quality of plants

  • Speeding up decomposition of garden waste

Home Bucket System

Our 25-litre digester buckets are made from recycled plastic. The straining trays are manufactured from A-grade plastic to ensure their strength and durability. The straining trays are one solid tray with no removable feet that can break off or bend over time. The tray separates the solid from liquid. The remaining “tea” is a concentrated, organic plant food that should be diluted at least 1:300.  The buckets are all made in South Africa because we believe in growing our own economy.

Commercial Kitchen Solution

For commercial restaurants, we use 50 litre drums to separate food waste at source. These drums weigh about 35kgs when full so are manageable to move around by waste staff.

Home & Commercial Kitchen – Simple Process

The Bokashi Bran® system is easy to implement in the home and in commercial kitchens. The food waste is separated at source and treated with Bokashi Bran®. This stops food waste from rotting.

What is Bokashi?

Bokashi is wheaten-bran that has been brewed with effective micro-organisms (EM). It ferments food waste instead of the food waste rotting. Once the food waste has been fermented, it is converted into compost by mixing with garden waste.

The word “Bokashi” means fermented organic waste. Bokashi is the generic term for this type of food waste treatment.

Bokashi Bran® is a registered trademark to Bokashi Bran (Pty) Ltd

Approved for use in Commercial Kitchens

The Joburg Environmental Health department has approved the Bokashi Bran® system for use in commercial restaurants. It is Government’s intention to reduce food waste in landfill through the National Waste Minimisation Strategy.
