HOW TO CONVERT YOUR FOOD WASTE INTO COMPOST

When your bokashi bucket or digester is full with food waste and layered bokashi, it’s time to process it into compost. You need to leave it for 2 weeks OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT to allow for the fermentation process to complete. Ensure that the bucket is sealed properly and the tap is closed. If there is a supply of oxygen, the food waste will not ferment but rather go sour. During these 2 weeks, you are likely to see a white moss or fungi starting to grow on the top of the food waste and possibly even the sides of the bucket. This is a good sign as the micro-organism are doing their job. If you shake your bin around, you will hear the liquid “sloshing” around in the bottom. Tap the liquid off into another bucket and fill it up with water. This bokashi tea is incredibly concentrated so you need to dilute it 1:300 with water before feeding it to your garden. If you want to do a foliage spray with the bokashi tea, use a mix nozzle and keep diluting the tea. Concentrated bokashi tea will burn the leaves of your plants. “Too much of a good thing is never good.” 🙂

There are a number of methods you can use to process your food waste depending on the space you have, how established your garden is and how much you’re willing to invest.

A very worthwhile investment is a shredding or mulching machine. The trick to shredding is to try and put the twigs or sticks through the machine within 3 days of cutting them before they become too hard and brittle.
