The Bokashi Bran® Starter Kit is the perfect way to get started with bokashi composting in your home. This kit includes two high-quality 25-litre buckets with straining trays and taps, two 1kg bags of Bokashi Bran®, and a measuring scoop for easy application.
To use the kit, simply keep a counter container on your kitchen counter to collect food scraps throughout the day. The container is not included in this kit, but can easily be purchased separately. Each evening, empty the contents of the counter container into one of the black buckets, and sprinkle a scoop or two of Bokashi Bran® over the food waste.
Bokashi Bran® is made with a combination of bran, purified water, molasses, and EM® (effective microorganisms). This combination of ingredients helps to ferment the food waste and eliminate bad bacteria that can cause smells. If you have meat products added to the bucket, it is recommended that you give it a generous sprinkling of Bokashi Bran® to ensure you don’t have bad smells.
Keep the bucket sealed properly to allow the fermentation process to occur. The reason there are two buckets included in this kit is that you can use one bucket while the other ferments and waits to go into the compost pile. Once the first bucket is full, simply switch to the second bucket and allow the first one to continue to ferment.
When you’re ready to compost your bokashi-treated food waste, make sure you’re gathering garden waste in a compost pile. For every bucket of food waste, allow at least 4 buckets of garden waste. Composting is the process of combining brown garden waste (carbon) and green waste (nitrogen). With the Bokashi Bran® Starter Kit, you’ll have fresh compost every 7 to 10 weeks, depending on how hot it is. The packaging of the kit is fully compostable and recyclable, making it an eco-friendly choice for your home.
