Using Bokashi Bran® for plants involves integrating it into your gardening or plant care routine to enhance soil health and provide nutrients to your plants.
Here are the steps and benefits of using Bokashi Bran® for plants:
-
Bokashi Bran®
-
- Bokashi Bran® is a mixture of bran that has been fermented with beneficial microorganisms, including lactic acid bacteria, yeast and phototropic microbes.
- The fermentation process helps break down organic matter and kitchen waste.
-
-
Basics:
-
Bokashi Composting:
- Start by collecting kitchen food scraps such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and other organic kitchen waste.
- The ground-breaking difference for composting is that by using bokashi, you can add meat products, cooked food and dairy in your food waste composting process.
- Layer the kitchen scraps in a Bokashi bucket or bin, sprinkling Bokashi Bran® between the layers.
- Press down on the waste to remove air pockets, and seal the container tightly. The process is anaerobic, meaning it occurs without the presence of oxygen.
-
Fermentation Period:
- Allow the Bokashi bucket to ferment for about 2 weeks. During this time, the waste will not decompose fully, but it will undergo a pickling process.
- You’ll start to see white fungi appearing on top of the food waste and down the sides of the bucket. This is a sign of good fermentation.
-
Application to Plants:
- After the fermentation period, bury the Bokashi pre-compost in the soil around your plants. Dig a trench or hole, deposit the material, and cover it with soil.
- Alternatively, you can mix the Bokashi pre-compost directly into your compost pile.
Benefits of Bokashi for Plants:
- Nutrient-Rich Soil: Bokashi pre-compost adds nutrients to the soil, including beneficial microorganisms, which can improve soil structure and fertility.
- Improved Plant Growth: The nutrients released during the fermentation process can enhance plant growth and vitality.
- Increased Soil Microbial Activity: Bokashi promotes the activity of beneficial microorganisms in the soil, fostering a healthy soil ecosystem.
Application Frequency:
- You can use Bokashi regularly as part of your composting routine, providing a continuous source of organic matter and nutrients for your plants.
